Garden Invitation by the Prince-Bishop
The former prince-bishops of Eichstätt established parks around their residences and they have blessed Eichstätt with two magnificent parks.
To reach the first park, you have to hike up to the Willibaldsburg, a fortress that sits high above town. The “Bastionsgarten” was once the famous botanical garden of Prince-Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. It was destroyed completely during the Thirty-Year War and all that remains of its splendor are pictures: the magnificent, historical copper engravings “Hortus Eystettensis.” The flowerbeds in today’s “Bastionsgarten” have been designed after the pictures of the historical etchings. The second green space is located in the valley next to the former summer residence of the princebishops. Take a stroll past artistically sculpted hedges and decorated pavilions reminiscent of 18th century tastes, when the park was established. Part of the park was redesigned in later years, when landscape gardens became popular, and an arboretum with a unique collection of trees was added. The royal garden will be the site for the Eichstätt Garden Show from August 1 & 2, 2015.
