Margravial Garden Art
Baroque-style parks from Bayreuth’s margravial era offer some of the best garden architecture.
Bayreuth’s margraves established a number of amazing and unique parks around town: the “Hofgarten,” the “Eremitage,” the “Fantaisie” Castle and the rock garden “Sanspareil,” which were all developed by the passionate Margrave Wilhelmine in the 18th century. The hermitage was a present from her husband that she redesigned according to her likes. She added a new castle, a sun temple, an orangery and artificial ruins, securing her park a special place among all 18th century parks. Wilhelmine and her husband received the inspiration for the “Fantaisie” Castle during a trip to Italy. In 2000, “Fantaisie” became the location for the first German Garden Art Museum. The rock garden “Sanspareil” is aptly named. It truly does not have an equal. For the wedding of Wilhelmine’s daughter, the garden was spruced up with a small castle and a ruin theater. The hermitage is especially festive during the “Sommernacht” Festival and both, the “Eremitage” and the “Sanapareil,” are locations for summer concerts and festivals from May through June.
