Franconian Wine Perfected
Würzburg is synonymous with Franconian wine. The worldfamous wine comes from terroirs such as the “Würzburger Stein” and it is celebrated and enjoyed year-round at wine festivals, wine tastings, and cellar tours.
Würzburg is ground zero for Franconian wines and the town is completely surrounded by vineyards. The largest wineries in Germany, the Bürgerspital, the Juliusspital and the Staatlicher Hofkeller, call Würzburg home. Discover the secrets of Würzburg winegrowers at a wine tasting by candlelight or a cellar tour. At the Staatlicher Hofkeller, your cellar tour will take you deep under the UNESCO World Heritage Residenz castle. Area wine festivals are a casual place to experience Franconian wine and to make new friends. Würzburg offers many options when it comes to wine festivals: there is the festival in the courtyard of the Residenz castle, the “Hofschoppenfest” at the Bürgerspital, the “Weindorf” festival, the “Weinparade”, and many more.
Beer Revolt in the Wine City
Würzburg is known for its superb wines, but beers? Yes, indeed! Not only can you always enjoy a glass of beer anywhere Franconian wine is served, there were actually times in the city’s history when there were more breweries than wineries in town.
Furthermore, in the city chronicles, there is mention of a “beer revolt” in 1866 and again in 1872 the trigger for which was the increase in the cost of beer. Today, beer drinking is a leisurely activity in Würzburg. There are two breweries, the “Brauhaus,” which is a private brewery, and the “Würzburger Hofbräu,” that was founded in 1643 by Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn. The “Hofbräu” is one of the oldest still operating businesses in the city.
