Green Thumb and World Heritage City
On first sight, there are one-story houses, small windows, and large wooden doors. You have to look closer to discover the secrets of Bamberg’s yards and gardens. Private courtyards are home to micro farms cultivating local vegetable varieties, including truly unique cultivars, such as the “Bamberg Hörnla,” a local potato variety, or the local liquorice.
This UNESCO World Heritage city is especially notable too for the uninterrupted use of inner city garden space for vegetable cultivation since the Middle Ages. Today, there are about three dozen micro farms in Bamberg where you can purchase produce direct from the farm. Discover Bamberg’s farming history at the “Gärtner- und Häckermuseum” or book the guided tour “Tracking the Gardeners.” Of course you can also sample the local produce at restaurants and inns throughout Bamberg. Especially recommended is the Bamberg curiosity called the Bamberg Onion.
Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a world-class destination for food and drink. Bamberg is home to nine large breweries, two malt houses, a brewery museum, a beer brewing equipment factory, and there are about 70 microbreweries in the surrounding areas. There is no other place on the planet with an equal amount of beer varieties.
Bamberg’s beer brewing heritage goes back over 900 years. To this day, the craft of brewing beer and its heritage are cultivated with great passion. Bamberg’s breweries offer about 50 different varieties of beer. Legendary among them is the smoked Bamberg “Rauchbier.” You can sample all the beer varieties at the brewery inns in town or, in the summer, outside of town at the beer cellars. These so called beer cellars really are beer gardens that are located directly above historical cellars where you used to get the freshest beer. Bamberg beers are of course also staples at the many beer and kermis festivals.
The beer tour includes samples of five specialty beers, a visit to the brewery museum, a daypack, and
a traditional beer stein. The tour is part of the three-day offering BierSchmecker® Reise through the UNESCO World Heritage City.
